Our clients wanted to open a new bar in the location of an existing run down ‘old mans pub’. The layout was difficult and it was hard to imagine it being anything other than what it had been for 50 years. The key to resolving the difficult shape was the positioning of the bar and kitchen.
Our clients wanted the building to offer high end food and to be a’grown up’ bar. In some ways we approached this in terms of reimagining what is an Irish pub and I think The Universal does challenge this. Contrasting rough concrete floors with a seventies/mid century inspired bar, mixing smoking room inspired, button back tanned leather banquet seating with traditional bent wood chairs and hand picked select artworks from local artists, it creates a warm inviting atmosphere that you dont want to leave..
