This project is a total refurbishment and extension and alterations of an original semi detached home built in the seventies. Our client was keen to respect the original seventies style of the home and reflect this in the design and this has been done very successfully.

The design of this house was inspired by the tall trees that characterise the site. The volumes of the building rise into the sky and, on the inside, create spaces that vary in height and proportion. A central staircase acts as the spine of the house and connects the rooms. Light floods the interior from different angles similar to sunlight shining through the canopy of a tree. The interiors are dominated by white walls, bamboo floors and pops of colour on furniture and structural elements.

We worked with Jess and Dave Murphy to convert an existing flower shop into the wonderful Kai restaurant. Part of the brief was that Jess wanted anyone and everyone to feel comfortable in the space from a solicitor to a construction worker.

A south facing elevated site with views was the primary thing that informed the design of this house. The requirement was to create a bungalow due to the elevated nature and restricted heights but not to end up with a large squat looking house

A narrow and awkward building that is listed as a protected structure. We worked with the client to provide a light and welcoming space within which to display design objects and serve coffee. It has become an iconic institution listed recently In the Financial Times as one of its 30 ‘Best Independent Coffee Shops In The World’.

This semi-detached Victorian dwelling stood empty for a number of years before being purchased by the current owners. A radical refurbishment and addition of a two-storey extension to the rear created a stunning, contemporary home. The stepped roofs of the extension with high level windows and an internal light shaft add light in unexpected areas. Stained glass as well as custom built furniture and features add original and organic elements to the interior.

This new build home takes its proportions from the old run down cottage that was demolished. The home owner comes from a farming back ground and there is a great focus on the idea of the old ‘farmyard’and life centring around teh farmyard, the house and sheds create a modern interpretation of this idea.

McCambridges of Shop Street has been a family owned supermarket and delicatessan on Shop Street in Galway for over 100 years so it was indeed a challenge to convert a first floor store room into a new restaurant with new internal interlinking stairs.

When my clients bought this house it had been used as three individual flats, all poky and damp. It has now been transformed into a family home with a double height space at the end of the kitchen overlooking the garden to the rear. Big glass openings have been cut into the existing structure flooding the space with light. The interiors are eclectic with hints to the Victorian period in which the house was originally built as well as contemporary and up cycled elements.

The design of this extension was to create more space for a growing family. The original building is a timber frame Scandinavian Home from Scan Home and the same level of quality in terms of airtightness and insulation needed to be achieved. We created a new living room and master bedroom and covered entrance which relocated the existing front door. The extension maximises views of the lake to the rear and changed the way our clients live.

Our clients wanted to open a new bar in the location of an existing run down ‘old mans pub’. The layout was difficult and it was hard to imagine it being anything other than what it had been for 50 years. The key to resolving the difficult shape was the positioning of the bar and kitchen.

Our clients approached us to design an extension to this traditional cottage in the village of Menlo. The front of the building was south facing and the solution was to create a double height volume to the rear with large skylights to capture and bring in the light while also creating a large window opening and window seat in the front wall of the cottage. The two storey rear extension cant be seen from the front so it as a pleasant surprise when one walks into the cottage and is greeted by the bright double height kitchen and mezzanine living area. The clients used there own skills to provide the interior decoration and entered the home into the RTE Home Of The Year TV program where it made it to the final 2 houses but was unfortunately beaten by a ‘castle’.

We worked with the original founders of the Portershed: Michael Fizgerald of One Page CRM and Paul Killoran of Exordo who approached us with a vision to convert a building at galway train station that was full of offices into an open plan shared workspace and hub for startups. Climbing into the attic we discovered the old beams that had been hidden for 50 years and we created a design that revealed the original fabric while providing construction and insulation detailing to allow it to function as a comfortable modern office space.
